Advantages: Colourful and charming
Disadvantages: None
Little Miss Birthday is one of 18 stories in the Mr Men and Little Miss books with added Sparkle collection. The reason these books are called with added sparkle is the fact that all of the front covers have something glittery or sparkly or shimmery about them. I must add at this point however that despite being a huge Mr Men and Little Miss fan I wasn't immediately aware of the existence of these books and to be truly honest have only recently begun to purchase them.
The front cover of this book is very shimmery and extremely eye catching especially for small children. Little Miss Birthday is pictured standing in the middle of a room surrounding by glittery multi-coloured balloons and an array of brightly coloured and shiny presents. Little Miss Birthday is herself a square pink character with bright yellow hair and a purple bow. She also bears strapped bright blue shoes and is constantly beaming from ear to ear.
The book itself was published to coincide with the 35th birthday o f the Mr Men characters in 2006 - hence the character being called Little Miss Birthday. Alongside the release of this book was the release of Mr Birthday, who is this characters cousin.
The story itself is a really delightful one to read and tells the tale of Little Miss Birthday who loves giving birthday presents and even has a large book at home with everyone's birthday written in it so that she never forgets one. In particular however this story tells us about the time that Little Miss Birthday couldn't think of what to get one of her friends as a present. This friend was Mr Wrong and she couldn't sleep at night for wondering what to get him. How on earth was she going to decide what to get him and would he even like what she'd eventually decide upon?
Some equally wonderful pictures drawn by Adam Hargreaves accompany this superb little story. These pictures breathe life into the story and give it a real dimension and depth. I must say that personally I think the pictures in the newer Mr Men and Little Miss stories, such as this one, are ten times better than they ever where in the older ones and make the stories so much more enjoyable to read.
The pictures not only brighten up the story but also make it much easier for younger children to follow what is going on in the story. Illustrations of other well loved characters also make the story one that is useful for discussing colours and getting children to recognise images from elsewhere.
This book can be purchased from any good book shop or online and retails at £2.50. It is however possible to purchase it for cheaper than this if you shop around - try the supermarkets first. Wherever you purchase it from though I'm sure that you or whoever it is bought for will adore it and treasure it forever.
Summary: A lovely sparkly edition
