Advantages: Great writing

Disadvantages: Slightly dated

I was quite old before I read Little Women, but I immediately wished I had read it earlier. Forget the films or the abridged versions, this full and complete version is the only thing that will do. It is simply beautiful and is something that I think all young girls should read or have read to them as soon as they are old enough to understand it.

~~~Plot~~~
The book, by Louisa May Alcott, tells the story of the March family, a mother and father who have four young girls who are entering their teenage years and have many issues to deal with. Meg has great social ambition and loves fine clothes but finds her desires thwarted by the March family's lack of money, Jo is a tomboy who loves to write and rejects anything approaching romance despite the presence of a boy next door who would be perfect for her, Beth is sweet and timid and altogether too gentle, and the youngest Amy is self-obsessed. The main thrust of the book has the girls struggling to overcome their own weaknesses, which they acknowledge to each other towards the beginning. It follows them over a period of many years and we feel watch them grow and mature.
~~~What I thought~~~

Although this book was first published in 1868 it has not aged badly. The language is straightforward and not at all archaic, and though it is obviously not as modern or perhaps as appealing to younger teenagers or adults as books today, I still think the book as a whole is very relevant.

The writing is charming and easy to read, and I loved it from start to finish. The characters are adorable and you will be swept along with them in their adventures, tragedies and relationships. I both laughed and cried during this book.

The book also has some great moral lessons and reminds us to be grateful for what we have, and to love and care for each other before ourselves.

You can buy this book for just £2 from Amazon.co.uk and you can also purchase the sequel, Good Wives, if you wish. I think this is a book every woman and girl should have on their bookshelf.

Summary: If you haven't read it, it's worth spending thr £2!
