I own about 10 different Lonely Planet travel guides, some I have used for travel some I have not.

In my opinion this series of books is still the number 1 independent travellers bible. Within backpacking circles I often hear people speaking badly of the LP, but whenever I have been travelling I would say that 80% of people are either carrying it with them or have consulted it before leaving.

One critisism I hear is in regard to the accommodation recommendation - yes its true that many of the place listed in the book start to increase prices and lower quality as popularily goes up. The book is a GUIDE not a step by step instructon manual, use it to get to know the areas to stay but don't follow it to the letter - after all you are supposed to be independent travelers!

The sections on trasportation, language and local customs are my personal favourites. But really I like the whole range of books and can often be found glancing through them.
