Advantages: Lots of info

Disadvantages: Check the publication dates

It is a lot of fun to travel independantly in my opinion, I dislike those herd mentality tour operators who expect everyone to want to do the same thing and so I like to make my own travel arrangements and always avoid package tours, to help with the planning a good set of guide boos is really important and I find that the Lonely Planet books are really good, I also like the Rough Guide ones as well and have used others in my time.

The Lonely Planet guides are intended to help those back packing around and despite the recent bad press when a writer admitted making some of teh reviews up I still have found them to be pretty reliable.

All of th guides provide lots of back ground information about teh country that they cover including legal, health and historical information as well as lots of tips for getting around and places to visit.

I find the accomodation guides really useful as this can be one of the hardest things to sort out, they are usually ranked by price into categories and the comments are very honest as they are not trying to sell the place but give you some info to start your search.

When buying a guide always check how old it is as some places can change a lot i a matter of months so the older it is the less reliable the information, for example books produced before the psunami would be useless for places like the Maldives or Thailand.

Thre is also a website that has lots of information however I find that it is not teh easiest gto navigate. The books are not cheap, usually between £12 to £16 but they are well worth it.

have used the rough guides , but I think the third olive tree after the tumbledown house must have been cut down as we certainly did not arrive at the crete village we were setting out for :-)
