Advantages: Accurate, Life saver, User friendly for quick ref.
Disadvantages: Absolutely none what so ever!!!
I feel it only right to express in no uncertain terms my complete awe and respect for the Lonley Planet guides. Having travelled through contries such as China, Thailand, South Africa, Namibia, Central America etc I have never failed to tkae with me the Bible of travelling, and further more never failed to be let down by these guys. I think the most impressive of all was the Chinese guide. Whilst out in the wilderness and depths of China the guide never once failed to guide me in or offer help in some quite searching terms. The detail, accuracy and presentation of these guides is quite excellent and makes travelling between towns and villages etc quite undaunting and gives you a real feeling of confidence that when you get to your next destination you are in control of where to go and what to do. Fellow travellers who have used these guides will, I am sure, agree with me to the extent that if you are thinking of travelling aroound the world or in specific countries look no further than the guide that will provide with every little piece of generic information from the culture of the country you are going to, rituals, national behaviour, expectations of you as a guest, climate information all the way to specific information by town of what to see and do, where to stay (depending on budget) and how to do it. These books, due to the work that goes in to them, are not what you would describe as cheap, however if I could supposition one piece of advice to a potential / new traveller, it's not to save £5 on a cheaper book or guide, but invest in this - I PROMISE THAT IT'S WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!!

ShoppingGirl - 24/07/01 yeah - more detail please! I personally feel a bit lukewarm about Lonely Planet - the ones I've used can be a bit condescending. Mind you , I've never been anywhere remote like you have. Also, they use that heavy, shiny paper - surely too much weight for that backpack?? Cheers, karen |
