Advantages: This books proves that there is good in everyone no matter how well they hide it
Disadvantages: It's a huge book that makes your arms ache
This book is fantastic. It begins with Nelson relating with pride the history of his family, his tribe and his beloved South Africa. He does it in such a way as to leave you in no doubt that he is a simple man with a simple and singular wish, that no-one should be put upon by others. He goes into great detail about his life as a child and all the people and places, both good and bad, that influenced him. He details the struggle an ordinary African had to endure just to get a basic education. Not an education of Africa by Africans, but a white man's education, teaching him that the Africans are savages and Europeans are the saviours of the world. It is no wonder that he became involved with the ANC and the freedom struggle, what surprises me most is the length of time it took him to get involved. And get involved he did, and what a price he ended up paying. There are examples galore throughout the book of why he is the most compassionate man to have ever walked the earth, he can see the good in everyone, and is that which enabled him to endure the privations he suffered at the hands of a misguided regime. Enjoy
