Advantages: Incredibly funny, Cathartic, re-readable
Disadvantages: nothing i didn't like about it.
I have seriously been tempted to drive up to Huddersfield and hang round in the hope meeting this man, just to see if one person can really be that funny - and accident prone - in the flesh. Deric Longden writes about the detail in his life - and I really mean detail! A whole chapter in his book may just be about a trip to the petrol station. But somehow he manages to see the little things in life that other people miss and this makes them incredibly funny, refreshing and different. He is able to describe really personal and emotional events with a frankness and honesty that draw the reader into his experiences. His books take you through the death of his wife, Diana, from M.E.; the arrival and departure of several cats; his second marriage; the death of his Mother and the making of 'Lost for Words' into a television programme. Despite the events, the books are never depressing or melancholy - Deric can see humour where most of us would only see despair and his writing is a wonderful tribute to the people he has known in his life. I would heartily recommend this author to anyone who is feeling a bit blue, or struggling to find their silver lining. Be warned though, it's not a good idea to read Deric's stuff in a public place as you WILL laugh out loud!
