Advantages: Fun

Disadvantages: none

I brought this book because I had read other books by Jenny Colgan and had found them entertaining and fun to read.

The story features around a woman called Ellie (known as Hedgehog to her friends, because she is so spikey) and her circle of friends. At the beginning of the book we are introduced to Ellie on her thirtieth birthday as she is getting ready for her birtday party which has an 80's theme (Ellie loves everything 80's).

After a bad experience involving her boyfriend and a trombonist Ellie starts to wonder what life is all about (a feeling I think everyone knows). She begins to feel restless and disatisfied with her life and while sitting in her old bedroom at her Dad's house, which has not been redecorated since the 80's she discovers a poster of her favourite Brat Pack Actor - Andrew McCarthy (hence the title). She hatches a plan to find out why she is feeling the way she is and seek enlightenment.

Her plan is that she and her friends go to America and look for Andrew McCarthy. She feels that American films made in the eighties made her expect too much out of life and thinks maybe the Brat Pack actors could shed some light on whether life is generally bad or whether it is specifically hers.

With this in mind she heads to LA (which is where to start any hunt for a famous actor). The story follows her travel through America and I really shouldn't tell you much more than that because it will spoil it for you.

The book is funny and very entertaining. Ellie is a superb heroine as she is easy to relate to. Her listelssness and disatisfaction with the way her life is going are well described and you may recognise the feeling from a past stage of your life (or possibly a current one).

I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone wanting a light and entertaining read. The book is not particularly topical and will not provoke deep thoughts but it serves its purpose well. It is
a pleasant way to spend a few hours. Just don't get any ideas!
