Lord Demon was one of Zelazny’s earlier works and has a very typical early story line, the super powered figure with emotions and feelings. What starts as an entertaining fantasy novel however soon deepens into a very telling view of the human condition. Kai Ren our protagonist in this adventure is a demon, famous glass blower, sorceror and warrior he lives his life with a casual arrogance. However when his esteemed human servant is killed seemingly at the bequest of another demon Kai Ren sets out to find the culprit. However the trial leads deeper and deeper and leads a trail back to a war that happened millennia ago between Gods and Demons. A war where Kai Ren gained the title Lord Demon from slaying a God single handed. Kai Ren is an entertaining and fascinating character, there are definite comparisons between his character in this story and Corwin’s in the Amber novels. Both are strong powerful yet compassionate characters and both put what they believe in before there own gain and their own revenge. A classic book well worth going back to and is fascinating not just for its story but for the beautiful intertwining of eastern religion and good old fashioned story telling.
