Hercule Poirot is once more called to investigate what appears, initially, to be a straightforward case. Jane Wilkinson, an actress, has been seeking a divorce from her husband, Lord Edgware and has called upon the assistance of Poirot to persuade the peer to agree to one. Shortly afterwards Lord Edgware's butler admits a woman claiming to be Jane Wilkinson who announces she wishes to see her husband. A brief while after she departs the body of the peer is discovered. It is apparent, therefore, that there can be only one solution. Yet Jane Wilkinson had attended a dinner party the evening her husband was murdered.
