Advantages: To read a classic

Disadvantages: Deep meanings which can be hard to grasp

I never studied this book so it wasn't forced on me. I wanted to read it because it was a classic, and it is so very often mentioned in a lot of articles you read.

The story is about youngs boys who are marooned on an island after a plane crash. They try to adapt to life without adults, this leads them to plot and murder and build their own community.

They have to learn democracy, dictarship and survival without any guidance from the adults, so it reveals childish points of view on life.

The blood from frenzied pig hunts arouses their childish fear and turns it into something sinister and primitive. It tends to bring out the worst in them and they fight amongst each other and the community divides.

The means of communication to be heard is to hold the 'conch'.This becomes the symbol of leadership. The concepts used in this book are similar to the adult world, except from a childs prospectus.

The ideas of society and human nature provokes deep thought into how we work as a society or in a team.

It took a real effect to finish this book, but I felt compelled to finish it so I wouldn't be left not knowing how it ended. It had phases of 'not getting anywhere', and I had to battle through the pages.

If you can perservere it's worth reading. However I can see why school children grow to hate it after studying it for exams, it's hard enough to grasp the meaning without having t go even deeper into it.

If you found this interesting it is based on the philosophy of Hobbes, you may find it interesting to dip into him.
