Lord of the Flies - teaching aid! (Lord of the Flies - William Golding)

Advantages: Versatile for study Disadvantages: Old-fashioned language not always instantly understandable
This is a versatile book when it comes to English GCSE. There are universal themes of man's primal instinct and basic fears and desires. It is useful for sociological analysis, eg can be compared successfully to John Steinbeck's 'The Pearl' (dog eat dog society and the destructive nature of man). It is also fairly short and broken up into digestible paragraphs making it a appropriate for a scheme of work of lessons. The story itself is also interesting, although the language a little archaic, which can create distance between the narrative and younger readers. Summary: |
