Advantages: A great and compelling novel that sets us up for a wonderfull series
Disadvantages: I'm going to miss a couple of the characters
The Lord of the Isles is the first in a five part epic fantasy series written by David Drake. The series is then followed by the Crown of the Isles trilogy which completes the isles super series.
The lord of the Isles follows the adventures of four friends from the small village of Barca's hamlet as they transverse the world trying to accomplish their goals. Tenoctris accompanies Garric, who is the main focus of the series, as he leaves with Liane and her father. Sharina leaves with Nonnus, the hamlets 'medicine man', as she is taken away by nobles. Cashel leaves the hamlet to forget about Sharina, who he secretly loved and Ilna leaves to stop Garric and Liane from falling in love.
The story is amazingly well written and the plot is outstanding. The magic in the book and the way it effects the characters, esspecialy Cashel, is a delight to read.
Unfortunately i found i had to put the book down as it is so large i would have been up all night if i read it in one sitting as i usually do, but this is a major plus as i love long books. And this book needed to be long to fit in all the sub-stories and plot twists.
David Drake and these books are the reason i am always on the lookout for new authors. If i had never picked up the book in my local charity shop i would have missed a lot.
Summary.
A great well written novel which sets the foundations for a master series.
There are moments where you have to laugh out loud, and moments where you have to dry you're eyes, even if your as heartless as i am (lol).
Highly Recommended
