Advantages: Epic Quest

Disadvantages: Very long

"Three rings for the elven kings under the sky,
Seven for the dwarf lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for the mortal men doomed to die,
One for the dark Lord on his throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie."

If you like fantasy and adventure this is the trilogy for you! The whole trilogy takes place in Middle Earth, an imaginary place with many regions, -such as Gondor, Rivendell, and Fangorn Forrest- and races -Men, Elves, Dwarfes, Hobbits and Orcs-. Long ago rings of power were made, which were given to each race by Sauron. The evil Sauron himself, also forged one ring to rule them all. After a huge battle between good and evil, Sauron was thought to be destroyed, as Isiuldur, son of the king had possesion of 'The One Ring'. But instead of destroying the ring there and then, the power of ring easily corrupted the heart of a man and made him want to keep the power for himself. The ring betrayed Isiuldur and passed though time un-noticed for many years until eventually, it ends up in the hands of a small being known as a Hobbit.

The story continues with Frodo Baggins (the Hobbit) Having to take up a heavy burden, with the aim to destoy 'The One Ring', but does so for some time with the fellowship. After splitting off from the group, Frodo and Sam head for Mount Doom to destroy the ring. By this time Frodo relises his journey will have to be done alone, and could take his life.

They have many adventures, even before they set off for their journey, including the meeting of Tom Bombadil. There is more adventure further as they pass magical forrests with large creatures known as Ents, and Their fiery quest through Mordor. Their quest is mirrored by the remainding part of the fellowship, in the more near, battle of middle earth. With the huge armys from Mordor abroad, and the Dark Riders loose, theres loads of excitment to go around.

I spent a long time reading these books over many months, and was sad to see i had finished. The begging for me is the best part. People say its to stretched out, but i say it gives an indepth view into the life of Frod and really shows his character. I think this also would help if you hadnt read the Hobbit. Also it has an Great ending. The last few chapters are amazing, and a real edge of your seat finale, with a few twists turns, and unexpected appearences, it will have you BITTING your fingers, with suspense.

The story comes in a trilogy, and can be bought either with three volumes, or six. Its about £20 for a box set of all three, and i would imagine them to be a little more if bought seperately. But like all things, you could probably find some cheap deals on ebay!

I would only recommend these books to fantasy enthusiasts, and people who are up for a long winded epic adventure.

Summary: Great Trilogy, definately worth reading

A warm welcome to Dooyoo!

I do love this trilogy, but there's just so much more you could/should have said - mostly what you've given here is a plot description. A good one, but the writing style, characterisation, depth of background - it's a BIG series to try and review at any point!

If you have any questions at all, do please feel free to ask - I'm the guide for the books category. Quickest way to reach me is via the free Tooyo guestbook system: http://www.tooyoo.org/boo k.php?user=calypte
