Advantages: Amazing, involving, superbly written
Disadvantages: Not for you if you like the short novel
With the three massively successful movies that were made from this trilogy, it's sad that some may never pick up the book, because as impressive as Peter Jackson's representations are, they will never compare to J.R.R. Tolkien's grand masterpiece.
Throughout The Lord of the Rings, we follow Frodo Baggins and his friends in their plight to overcome the evil lord Sauron and destroy the One Ring. We meet such memorable characters as Gandalf the Grey, Strider, the Nazgul, the Ents and Tom Bombadil (who unfortunately doesn't get to make an appearance in the films), and taken on a journey across great lands of beauty and terror.
This novel is such a spectacular work of the imagination and Tolkien's deeply descriptive style creates a world that pulls you right in. You don't only get to know the characters and even bond with them, you are right there on this adventure too; talking to trees, running from Uruk Hai (among other orcs) and trembling before the dreadful Eye. Now a good book can really move me (I even cry at adverts sometimes - I'm not overly emotional I swear), but in all the books I've read, no other has reached me like this one. By the end I felt like I was parting with friends and my own adventure was over; such is the magic of Tolkien.
The Lord of the Rings is an incredible work of literary art by an author worthy of genius status. Realistically, I could write a million word review and never be able to communicate the excellence of this novel. Even if you have seen the films and never touched the book; read it. And if you have? Read it again!
Summary: Did I mention it is marvelous?
