Advantages: Gandalf is cool
Disadvantages: Boring in bits
Ok, here i will write a few more words. I have just finished this book for the second time and I feel it needs to be commented on. The epic battle between good and evil adds an extra dimension to the story. The characters are noble and to be respected and for once, the goodguys are the underdogs but still come through. It is a story of how one small person can make a very big difference. Sometimes the book is confusing, and sometimes it is dull but the battle at the end makes up for it all. The story finally comes to a dramatic conclusion. The book contains many references to real life and other things like that, for example, the Shire is m eant to be England, I think. If you have read the hobbit then this book follows on from it, but develops the story for older readers and introduces other elements, like good and evil and makes one think more. All stories should have a good ending, and the Lord of the Rings does have a good ending. Even after the big battle, it still has another section about Saruman in the shire which makes one think about how evil isn't all big and can be smaller things. Maybe i am just reading into it too mcuh, but i like books that make me think. If you read one book in your life, make sure it is this one.
