Advantages: Best book I have ever read, Ongoing storyline, Powerful writing technique

Disadvantages: Length, it takes a while to read!, Descriptions can become a little tiresome

I think that the Lord of the Rings is a book full of imagination and wonder. It is appreciated by a person of all ages (usually 12-13 and over), which is quite difficult to accomplish, when writing a book. The story sucks in the reader, with its heavy amount of detail and classic storyline. The amount of detail causes the reader to fall into the beautiful settings and imagine him/herself there with the characters.

I appreciate the book on more than one level, not just because of the fantastic storyline, but because JRR Tolkien created a bestseller that sends out more than one message. I think he was trying to put his view across, that you do not need any kind of narcotics to escape reality. I think that this is demonstrated very well, as the book is very enthralling and full of fantasy.

The book mainly focuses on the classic struggle between good and evil, which brings out our moral side and causes us to support the main characters, opposing that evil.

If you have not indulged in fantasy books before, or considering where the whole thing started, read the Lord of the Rings. This is the book, which began an era and influenced writers all around the World to write fantasy novels. The book is (deservedly) successful and very favourable to the imaginative mind. Admittedly it is very long and this is what makes it so hard to put down, because the reader really wants to get questions answered and find out what happens.

The book is composed of three parts. The Fellowship of the Ring is very epic and a classic story of companionship and adventure. The Two Towers sees the splitting of the group into several new ones. The concept of this book is still adventure and new characters, but it ends on the tone of war and destruction. The last book, the Return of the King is fantastic, and my personal favourite of the three. It does not tie up as many loose ends as I would have wanted, but nonetheless the ending is very emotional and could not ha
ve been better.

The (arguably) main character, Frodo Baggins has destiny thrust upon him and forced into adventure, through no fault of his own. The reader feels sympathy for him and can picture him/herself doing the same thing. The main characters overcome their foes and fears to progress across Middle-Earth and a breath-taking finale occurs.

If you have not read this book, borrow it from your nearest source or buy as soon as possible. The films, good as they are, are nowhere near as inspiring as the books. The book just has this magic about it, that the films could not reproduce and therefore in my opinion, the book is better than the film.

I believe that the Lord of the Rings, is justified when it was given the award "Book of the Millennium" and it will still be running strong in years to come.
So if you enjoyed it as much as I did, please spread the word, because it will still be successful in years to come, I assure you!

Loved the two films so far, have never read the books, will get round to it eventually though.
