Advantages: Great illustrations

Disadvantages: It's a bit sad, the characters look unhappy!

My son got this book aged around 3, and he has enjoyed it a lot, although I wouldn't say it's a favourite. It's a charming story about a boy who befriends a penguin and tries to return him to his home at the South Pole. The illustrations dominate the page, with a little bit of text on each so it's ideal for children who haven't moved on to longer stories yet, and still enjoy the pictures more than the words! There is plenty to talk about in each picture.

This book will appeal to adventurous children. The boy sets out in his boat, encountering a storm and large waves on his way to the South Pole! It's quite a sad story in some ways, although the ultimate ending is happy, it does feel a little downbeat when you read it. It also doesn't have any of the repetitive or rhyming language that you so often find in children's books, and that my children both love.

The style of illustration is quite different though, so it makes a nice change from some other children's books available. It is a nice platform to start talking to your children about friendships, and doing things for other people.

Summary: One to borrow from the library!
