Advantages: The best read ever.
Disadvantages: none
I spent today reading 'A Child Called It' and 'The Lost Boy' by Dave Pelzer. I couldnt stop myself from finishing them both. I have never felt so sickened, moved and emotional as I felt reading both these books. A Child Called It. This is the first in the trilogy written by Dave Pelzer about what should have been his happy childhood. His early years during the 1960's are full of the every day normalities of perfect family life. His father a fireman and mother a perfect housewife. David describes the joys of Christmas, picnics in spring, and all the trips and adventures we like to believe are normal family things. Things quickly changed as his mother turned to alcohol. Not satisfied with basic punishment like sending David to his room, she soon cooked up tortures that this poor child would suffer for years to come. For some reason David was singled out,his brothers were treated with love and affection. I was sickened to read of the horrors that David suffered, endless beatings, ammonia being poured down his throat, being starved, burned, stabbed, there is no fit word to describe what this child suffered. I cried many a time during this book, wondering how his father and others could stand by and let this happen. I feel everybody should read this book as you will be touched and overcome in emotion like you have never experienced. 'The Lost Boy'. This is the second part of Davids life. It picks up from where it left off in the first book. Even though he is made a ward of court, the sadness in his life is far from over. His mother still has her hand in the pot, manipulating when she can. David is sent to a number of different foster homes. It seems that he is held responsible for being in foster care by small minded people. This made me feel angry that his mother never as far as it appears recieved any punishment for her crimes. I am going to get my hands on the last
book as soon as I possibly can'A Man Named Dave'. I feel so amazed that David managed to overcome what should have been the most happiest days of his life...his childhood. And it sickens me to know that there are thousands of 'Davids 'out there in the world today suffering the effects of physical and mental torture.
