I felt quite excited about reading this book, because I expected it to go into a great deal of detail about ancient cities and civilizations that I had not come across before or heard only a little about. I was disappointed, because it didn't go into a great deal of detail about anything and many of the cities could hardly be described as ancient or from little-known civilizations: an old convict colony in Australia, for example, and an abandoned Muslim city in the deserts of Iraq.
