Given the enormous popularity of Conan Doyle's 'Sherlock Holmes' stories, it is easy to overlook the fact that he wrote many other excellent works including historical novels and science fiction stories. 'The lost world and other stories' (Wordsworth 1995) is a collection of science fiction stories which certainly rival those of H.G.
