Advantages: fun and interactive book

Disadvantages: none

When Father Christmas came visiting at my daughter's nursery, he very kindly brought all of the children a present and 'Louie gets Dressed' is the book he brought my daughter. At first, I did think that it might be a bit on the young side for her as she is getting on for four but I was then surprised at just how big a hit it was with her (and also her five year old sister!)

The book only has about half a dozen cardboard pages and a very simple story showing Louie doing things at different times of the day. For example we see him in the bathroom getting ready to play in the bath and later on in the farm preparing to feed some animals. However, what you soon notice on all of these pages is that Louie (who incidentally is a white rabbit) is not wearing anything other than a pair of underpants! On each of the pages, the reader is asked what Louie should wear and they are given a couple of choices.

Now this is where the book deviates from just being a simple story book. This is because there are a number of articles of clothing which the child can place on Louie in order to cover up his modesty! These are all magnetic so they will stay in place until the child chooses to move them. There are rubber boots, dungarees, pyjamas, a hat, a cap, a pair of skis, a swimming costume, an anorak and a diving mask and snorkel. It's quite a bizarre collection which means that as well as making the obvious selections on each page, the child can also have great fun dressing Louie up in very funny combinations.

Both my daughters really enjoy dressing Louie on all the different pages and I think that the problem solving aspects of the book are very good. It's a lovely book to share with a small child because it really is likely to prompt a lot of discussion. Added to this all of the full page illustrations are very bright and colourful and Louie looks to be a charming character! The text is nice and simple which actually means that my five year old who is just learning to read can pretty much read all of the book to her younger sister. It's really lovely to see them together with this book.

The book is quite strong and sturdy with a wipe clean surface which is ideal for small children with sticky fingers. Also tucked inside the front of the book is a pull out tray where all the different clothes can be kept when Louie is not wearing them.

At the moment you can buy this book on Amazon for £6.59 and it will very likely provide good entertainment for a young child.

Summary: A lovely book to share with young children
