The story tells of the holiday of 17-year old Lara with her workaholic historian father Lambert in the pictaresque hills of the Italian countryside around Siena. They have been invited by an old friend of Lambert's called Caroline to stay at her villa with its delightful swimming pool perfect for cooling off from the summer heat.
