Lucy & Tom's Christmas is my favourite Shirley Hughes book. It describes the ordinary Christmas of two ordinary children, but manages to pack in so much that everything that makes Christmas special is condensed into this lovely little story. So Lucy & Tom help with the baking & write cards & buy presents, & when they wake up on the big morning a perfect family Christmas unfolds. This is another delightful picture story book by Shirley Hughes about events in the lives of the young sister and brother, Lucy and Tom. This one, as the title suggests, is all about how Lucy and Tom and their family and friends prepare for and celebrate Christmas. The story begins with Lucy and Tom helping to make the Christmas pudding, stirring it and making a wish. The postman brings cards and parcels, which are kept until Christmas. Lucy and Tom make their own Christmas cards and help to decorate the house and put up the crib. The children have bought small presents for each member of the family and these are wrapped and hidden by the children. ...  Read the complete review

A lovely childrens storybook, set right in the heart of childhood idealistic christmas memories. Shirley Hughes never fails to delight children with her simple idealistic books on childhood. This one is no exception. The illustarations are lovely, warm and cosy. As an adult, you feel yourself taken back in time to your own childhood as you read! It's a very simple story narrating the steps in preparation for Lucy and Tom's christmas. It shows the postman visiting more than usual with christmas cards, toy nativity scenes, the presents to be wrapped, writing letters to Santa, carol singers, shopping for a christmas tree, and decorating it, to ...  Read the complete review
