Advantages: Exciting, well written and brutally honest
Disadvantages: None
This autobiography of Sir Ranulph Fiennes should be read as part of the national curriculum it is a book that screams out that anything can be overcome through hard work and self belief.
I have always been interested in this superhero of a man from his attempts to cross the north and south poles, to running a marathon on six separate continents in six days through to his recent scaling of Everest well into his sixties, he is an inspiration and an example to us all.
Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes OBE, 3rd Baronet talks about his life from his early days through his time in the armed forces to his various adventures, from almost replacing George Lazenby as James Bond to his attempt to conquer the South Pole unaided, his story is an inspiration to us all, at no point is he sorry for himself or afraid, his spirit shines through as he loses fingers and almost dies on countless occasions.
As well as being an incredible adventurer the man has raised countless millions for charities through his expeditions, he has raised awareness of causes and used these issues as motivation to push himself beyond the limits of human determination. He is a true hero and thoroughly deserving of his knighthood.
Fiennes style of writing is totally honest, he is quite willing to accept that on expeditions you are likely to fall out with your travelling companions and accepts his own behaviour could have led to a lot of arguments on various trips. We learn about the commitment of Fiennes now deceased wife in raising money for his trips and in co-ordinating and worrying about this mad lunatic with no consideration of his own mortality. Fiennes is effusive in writing about his love and admiration for her and it is true that behind every great man there is a great woman. Fiennes is honest about his limitations in personality but accepts none in terms of his own spirit, he is a true British hero and a man who makes you proud to be part of the human race.
This is a real boys own adventure of a boy, from fighting with the arabs to discovering lost cities its amazing more so that it is true.
The book is well researched and well written you will come away in awe of this superman and also feeling that anything is possible if you just want it enough.
I own the paperback copy which is 400 pages and it's a great read, its available on amazon for £5.57 and is incredible value.
Summary: An awesome inspiration to us all
