Advantages: none

Disadvantages: boring

I read this book in both english and french as it was part of the syllabus when I did French A Level.

Well its not that fascianting. I can imagine for its time it was a bit racy as it showed the downfall of a french woman who was in love with the idea of being in love and so although married pursued various affairs, got into debt etc etc, and there had been a court case surrounding it regarding morals.

Personally I found the whoel story very boring, it is obvious from the beginning of the book what is going to happen (maybe not in detail, but its still obvious) and so you read it purely to see it through.

To me although written with many metaphors and imagery int he writing it's pretty much a mills and boon without a happy ending.

I studied Madame Bovary as part of my degree and would agree with most of what you said, it was quite interesting to study, especially if you're studying the history of the time aswell, but as an entertaining bedtime read? not really! The romantic in me does love the idea of dying of a broken heart though and you just don't get that in books these days...
