The place is Space. The human race has expanded to distant planets and are under the Nine Star League. Th Dragon series is definitely Anne Mccaffrey's best work, and Dragonflight is the first of the series. It was one of the first Sci-fi books I ever read, and years later, when I want to read an uncomplicated, feel-good book, I return to this one. I have read it several times and still love it. It starts on the planet Pern, where a group of people who have a special bond with the telepathic and empathic giant gentle dragons are facing a crisis. The planet's social structure has been changed in a way that threatens the safety of all it's citizens. We meet F'lar, the hero, and Lessa the heroine, who are from very different backgrounds.
