I was a fan of Terry Brooks from the first ?Shannara? books which were published about 20 years ago. I brought this book along with the ?Black Unicorn? and ?Wizard at Large? about seven years ago and have only recently got around to reading them.

It must be a testament to the story and writing skill that I have brought the final two books in the series which are ?Witches Brew? and ?The Tangle Box?.

The basic premise is that Ben Holiday; a successful Lawyer has lost his ?zest? for life and his looking for a new challenge in life. He has no real ties to his current life except for his job and he decides to answer an advertisement for becoming the King of Landover, a ?magical? kingdom from an elusive seller called ?Meeks?. Against his better judgement, he takes his $1 million and embarks on an adventure of a lifetime, or so he thinks.

He tries to use his skills and experience he has gained in the ?human? world to ?his? new environment. The kingdom has started to fall into ruin and not everyone recognises his rule including a Dragon ?Strabo?, a Witch ?Nightshade? who might be considered ?deadly?, the river folk and the Lords of the Greensward, who seem to have their own agendas.

Ben is helped by various new friends, although ?friendly fire? comes to mind at times. These include ?Questor Thews? who is loyal but an incompetent wizard, ?Abernathy? the court scribe who happens to be a talking dog (?Don?t ask!), ?Bunion?, ?Parsnip?, the enchanting ?Willow? and the ?Paladin?.

The story is about his initial struggle to gain acceptance and overcome obstacles to return Landover back to its original state. There are few conditions placed on the purchase by ?Meeks? and these unfold as the story progresses.

Once I started, it was difficult to put the book down. Despite the title, it is not a children?s book, it is a diversion from the ?Shannara? books and mixes our modern world with the idea of an alternative universe. I
found it to be a good holiday read.

Enjoy!

Oddly enough, I just bought this - and while it does take me a while to get through my pile of books I hope it doesn't take 7 years!! :)
