Book Three of The Belgariad ‘Magician’s Gambit’ By: David Eddings Magician’s Gambit Book Three of The Belgariad David Eddings Ballantine Books 1983 PB 305 ISBN# 0-345-33545-7 This is book three of five in The Belgariad series. The book can stand on its own, yet better understanding can be gained through reading the whole series. Garion is still traveling with his companions and encountering numerous, thrilling adventures in this book. He’s growing up – learning the truth about the ways of people, the horrible realities of life, but also gaining skill in sorcery, and friendships of depth. The groups of travelers seek to find the stolen orb, which can be held only by one who is pure and innocent of heart. If they do not succeed the evil Torak will awaken and possibly rule the world. At one point the travelers are forced to cross through the land of Maragor – places alive with ghosts who attempt to steal one’s mind and cause them to go mad. The wise and powerful Polgara and her father, Belgarath (Mr. Wolf) help by putting each traveler into a type of sleep while they cross. Starting through, Garion begins to witness terrible sites. He begins to panic as he realizes he’s not asleep as the others are. Why is he fully awake and aware just as is his Aunt Pol and Mr. Wolf? Then the special other mind comes to him, along with his Aunt’s soothing voice. The other voice guides him not only through Maragor, but also through the whole journey, and admits that it is indeed a separate entity. The young spoiled Imperial Highness of Tolnedran, introduced in book two of the Belgariad series, begins to take an interest in Garion, even though he makes her crazy with anger. She reminds herself that he’s just a simple farm boy and beneath her until one day she learns there may be more to him. He may be a sorcerer or a ki
ng. This third book continues the long journey of the Belgariad set in strange, warring lands. If you like the type of Fantasy with a group of travelers, each with a unique talent, you’ll like this story. As with the first and second, this Fantasy book is entertaining and delightful. It has magic, adventure, fascinating settings, people and creatures, suspense, humor, chivalry, danger and surprise. This one introduces a bit more horrendous acts of brutality though, causing one to sigh and shake their head at what humans are capable of. NOTE: There are five books total to The Belgariad series. This is the third. Each book is able to stand on its own, however, you may find it difficult not knowing what happens to each interesting character if you read only one… or two. Be forewarned.
