A Magick Life: The Life of Aleister Crowley - Martin Booth

Rating:

Advantages: fair, thoughtful

Disadvantages: lack of detail

This is by no means the worst biography of Aleister Crowley I have read. Many of them do little more than wallow in titillating descriptions of his weaknesses, which, to be fair, were manifold.
Martin Booth does at least attempt to provide a reasonably balanced portrait of this infamous figure, and makes an effort to highlight some of his positive achievements. He was, love him or hate him, a remarkable individual, or he wouldn't still be discussed today.
This book will only disappoint readers who have a particular interest in magick or mysticism or yoga and who were hoping to understand more than can be gleaned from Crowley's own writings, which are sometimes deliberately obscure.
It has however, paved the way for more balanced views of this fascinating man, of which at least one more has been published since.

Go on then, have you read "The Confessions"? I'm beginning to think I'm the only person in the world who has, cover to cover that is! Oh, welcome to dooyoo by the way!
