Lucy Cousins has written and illustrated many many children’s book. Ashe has a series of books about Maisy Mouse. In this series is a book called Masie makes lemonade I got this from the library to read to my grandchild.
Adrian aged 4, likes books enjoys a story and is beginning to pick out letters and words. I think it is important to have many suitable books around at home to dip into. Adrian has always had books around being read to from an early age.
Lucy Cousins has written many books for children. She has written a series of books about Maisy mouse these are suitable for children aged 2 + .Maisy books are published by Walker books.
Maisy makes Lemonade was first published in 2002 The ISBN is 9780744589467, it is a paperback measuring 8 x 8 x 0.2 inches. There are 24 pages in this book
I would recommend reading this book in the summer then you can go and make some lemonade with your child after reading it.
The illustrations in this book are good they are simple, not fussy. The colours are bright Maisy mouse is easily recognisable her expressions simple just two black eyes and often a black mouth in a smile she has two ears that stick up pertly on her head. The other character in this book is elephant Eddie he is drawn simply too. I like these drawings I could easily copy them for a wall display in the classroom.
Maisy has been immortalised on animated film Maisy can be seen on children’s TV or can be bought on DVD or video. I am not sure if the maisy makes lemonade is available but many other Maisy stories are.
In this book a picture is on one page words to go with the picture are on the opposite page. There are about6 to 12 words on the word pages explaining the picture.
The story is about Maisy mouse on a sunny day she is drinking lemonade and shares it with her friend Eddie they soon finish the bottle and are still thirsty.
Maisy has a lemon tree in her garden and she and Eddie pick them then they proceed to make lemonade squeezing the lemons adding sugar adding water. Eddie drinks all the lemonade while Maisy fetches the glasses. Now the book ends with Maisy saying Now you’ll have to make some more.
I enjoyed reading this book to Adrian and I am sure he will soon pick up the book to read for himself. This book would be suitable for foundation stage or key stage 1 reading.
If I was reading this to a class I might have some props by my side, a lemon maybe a stuffed maisie mouse toy and an elephant. There are many Maisie mouse things to be purchased party plates and mugs, jigsaws and dominoes and on eBay someone is selling a stuffed Maisie mouse toy for £1 http://www.shoprockcandy.com/mamo9pl.html is selling some for $15. If you are crafty I am sure you could make your own.. This book does not actually have a precise lemonade recipe in for mum to follow. I think this would have been a good idea to have on the last page. It is however easy to find a lemonade recipe from a cook book or on line.
