Told in the first person by Richard Pike, a somewhat dry narrator who nonetheless turns out to be a character of quite considerable depth, this, Calder’s seventh novel, is basically a fantasy with science-fictional trappings; thankfully, however, the whole thing is wrapped up in less than 360 pages and one does not have to wade through three massive volumes to reach the conclusion (and since the book is a definite page turner, this is a conclusion one most definitely wants to reach!). Apparently, due to some hokum involving parallel universes, man lost the ability to comprehend the complex machinery at his disposal, the world was plunged into a second set ...
