"A Man on the Moon" by Andrew Chaiken is a well written and detailed account of the historic Apollo space programme undertaken by NASA in the 1960s and 1970s that put 12 men on the moon. The book combines biographical information about the astronauts involved with descriptions of the missions themselves and highlights the technological and scientific achievements attained. The book reaches an early climax with its account of the well-known first lunar landing by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin in 1969, and from there it proceeds to get better as the missions become increasingly daring and successful.
