Bernard Cornwell's Richard Sharpe books, set during the Peninsular War, have all been major bestsellers and have spawned a successful TV series starring Sean Bean. In my opinion, the series success is due to a combination of gritty, fast paced stories and accurate, realistic historical information from the war between the French, and English and Spanish allies between 1809 and 1815. Bernard Cornwell weaves his tales well, combining fact and fiction together so expertly that it's often hard to tell one from the other.
