Ever since Twilight came out in the cinema, I seem to have developed a bit of a fascination with vampire fiction, having read many books, incluing many Anne Rice, the whole Twilight series, Let The Right One In, the Historian, and of course, the original - Bram Stokers Dracula .

Recently, I went on a trip to Waterstones where they had a ' 3 for 2' offer . One of the three I picked up was from the teenage fiction section, Marked, By P.C and Kristin Cast. This is the first in the House of Night series , which so far totals 5 books, as far as I'm aware , with book six due to be released later this year .

The book centres on 16 year old Zoey Redbird, who is marked as a vampire. This book shies away from the traditional notion of a new vampire being born by blood drinking - instead, a marked victim is given a crescent moon on the forehead, which indicates that they have to enter a vampire finishing school, the House of Night. There is no choice, because if she doesn't, she'll die . Of course, some fledgeling vampires don't complete the change anyway, but at least by entering the school she has a fighting chance.

Of course, the transition isn't easy . Her deeply religious step-loser thinks that her being marked is a sign of sin, and her mother is happy to go along with whatever her husband says . Her best friend, Kayla, is clearly freaked out, and her boyfriend Heath isn't any better . Life is made even harder in that the vampire goddess Nyx seems to have boosted Zoeys progress along, so her change seems to happen faster than that of a normal fledgeling.

So Zoey immerses herself in this strange new school, making soem new friends along the way - Stevie Ray , a slightly geeky girl with a southern accent. Damien, a gay guy whose parents can accept his vampirism but not his sexuality, and the twins, an ebony and ivory pair who are in no way related but share an eerie ability to guess each others thoughts and actions .

Of course, she makes some enemies too, particularly Aphrodite, the leader of the Dark Daughters, an elite school society.

The books are written by a mother and daughter duo, and occasionally that shows - sometimes one paragraph doesn't quite gel with the next . You can definitely see a young influence in this book - many references to current celbrities, such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as 'Vamps'. While this does perhaps make this appeal more to teenagers, I do feel that this book won't have any longevity - in 20 years, someone will open a book and wonder 'who the hell are these people ?'

There is also a lot of 'OMG' 'Whatever' 'Cutilicious' too, which I find a little irritating, although I guess this might work for teenagers.

I have one BIG gripe, perhaps better directed at Waterstones than at the book itself. I was shocked to at one point in the book read a rather graphic blow job scene . Now, I'm not a prude, and I'm certainly not scared of a blow job, but I do feel the book should have had some indication on the cover that it had sexual content .

Overall, I did enjoy this book, although it took me awhile to get into it - I had to get used to the annoying teen speak, and get over my shock at the blow jobs . The plot, once it got going was pretty decent, and I actually ended up really enjoying myself reading, so much so that I've purchased further books in the series .

I would recommend this book - but not for prudes, or younger children.

I can't believe the book cover doesn't mention that the book is only suitable for mature teens or something. xx
