After reading more than one review of this on here it finally made the jump from supermarket shelf to my shopping basket last week (mostly because it was Dads turn to pay for the main shop and its easy to sneak books in to his trolley from my basket). Marley is a yellow lab owned by John and Jenny Grogan, as with many pet owners their choice of dog wasnt the best planned but they fell in love with the pup who became Marley and that was that. Even from the first meeting with Marley the clues to his adult behaviour were there, fearlessness, an eagerness to love them and an enjoyment of simply receiving affection, then of course there was his dad who ... Man's best friend is his dog. Can that be true? Some people have the most marvellous dogs, well behaved, do tricks, never do anything wrong and give devoted friendship to their owners. Other people have terrible dogs that wreck the house, bark, snarl, bite, sling drool and never obey orders. Choosing a dog is a very difficult thing, when you have a baby, you don't know what they will turn out like, but you're stuck with what you've got! Choosing a dog is like choosing a partner, and needs careful thought, love at first sight doesn't always work! Some preparation into the parenthood is required! I borrowed this book from one of my daughter's, and I know ... Read the complete review

This is a truly well written fantastic book, which I would recommend to any dog lover. But I think if you own a labrador in particular then whilst reading this book you will constantly see the similarities between Marley and your furry friend. The story is basically about John Grogan and the life of his loveable yellow labrador. You are taken through all the trials and tribulations of this dogs life, whether he was naughty or just a normal labrador, its up to you to decide. I personally think he's just a loony Labrador and typical of the breed. He gets into lots of mischief and is scared stiff of thunder, but after all the problems he's caused his owner, like ... This is the story of Marley a big Labrador retriever with a big personality, a big heart and a big supply of boundless energy, not to mention a big destructive element! It is a true story written by John Grogan a journalist and proud owner of Marley “the world’s worst dog”. It is a painfully honest account of life with Marley from when they decided to get a dog right through their life with Marley. It captures the highs and the lows, the good times and the bad times, they do not gloss over Marleys bad points but freely admit that their efforts to train him to be a wonderful obedient dog failed miserably. However through it all you get the sense that ... Read the complete review

I first read this book before the film was released - I saw it in the book section of a supermarket and the cute labrador on the cover caught my attention. I read the spiel on the back and the dog Marley reminded me of my parents dog so I had to buy it. The story takes you right from John and his wife choosing Marley as a puppy, through his autumn years until his death. Be warned if you decide to read this book, before you do so make sure you have a box of tissues nearby. You won't need them until the later chapters but you'll get to those quickly, and the tissues will be needed. If you have ever owned a dog through it's later ... Read the complete review
