Advantages: Easy to read, lovely illustrations, lovely story.
Disadvantages: None
Have you ever felt as though somebody was always trying to do better than yourself? Somebody doing that extra bit of effort that you know is totally unnecessary but they do it anyway.
Well that somebody is the main character of this lovely children’s picture story book.
Welcome to Marvin the sheep.
Marvin Wanted More! By Joseph Theobald.
Marvin wanted to be bigger, run faster and be able to jump higher than the other sheep, so he kept eating and eating.
Only as he became able to jump higher and run faster, Marvin didn’t stop eating, he continued to eat until there was nothing left to eat. Molly his friend kept begging him to stop eating but Marvin wouldn’t listen.
When there was no friends left, Marvin felt lonely and sick!!! He gave a big Baaaa and out came Molly and everything Marvin had eaten.
Marvin got his fields, trees and more importantly Molly back and some things didn’t quite end up as they were but Marvin didn’t care. He had learned an important lesson.
Molly liked him the way he was but also Marvin learned that he liked himself just the way he was.
The book is beautifully illustrated with large, simple illustrations in bright colours. It is a easy book to read with text that flows along nicely, making it easy for the young listener to keep up and digest what is being read.
It is one of my sons’ favourite book and is often a bedtime favourite.
There are opportunities to discuss the morals issue when appropriate and other topics of conversation are possible, such as, not showing off, over eating, considering others feelings, etc.
Such topics are good for learning areas within personal/social development for young children to be introduced to without realising that they are actually learning.
Marvin Wanted More! By Joseph Theobald.
Published by Bloomsbury Paperbacks.
ISBN – 0747564817
It is available in all good bookstores, this copy was bought from Waterstones at a cost of £5.99. Amazon have copies available from 75p for used and 85p for new copies. Why did I pay so much? Never mind, it has been worth it and I would definitely recommend to any parents of young children.
Summary: Moralistic story of a sheep overeating to be better than every other sheep.
