Advantages: Fully illustrated, Easy to Follow, Good Recipes
Disadvantages: None
Can't cook? Good cook? Buy this book, you won't regret it. I used to be a pretty naff cook (even though I say it myself - before anyone else does!), but, like everything else, you get better with practise (hopefully). I just make things up as I go along now (cooking that is), it all seems to come together in the end. But, when I first started, I had no idea, which flour do I use, plain or self-raising, what is gas mark 5 in electric terms? Just the basic stuff really, well, time-saving tips and ideas are plentiful in this book. There are more than 1,000 recipes, each of which are fully llustrated, so you have no excuse for cooking the same old thing time after time. It is broken down into 12 chapters ranging from Hot and Chilled Soups to Chilled Desserts and each chapter is broken down into preperation times ie. under 30 mins, 30-60 mins and over 60 mins, so if you need a quick snack, you know immediately which section to go to. Each recipe has a glossy fully coloured picture and there are step by step photographs for 'Know-How' topics ie. Preparing Vegetables, Boning a Whole Chicken, Buying and Storing Pasta (did you know you can keep pasta in the cupboard for up to 2 years!). I don't know about you, but I never like the ones that have either no pics at all or they are just pen and ink drawings, I mean, how appetising does that look? It's quite a large hard backed book, about A4 size, with 500+ pages, each full of photos, so you are getting your moneys worth. The RRP is £25, I bought mine from a book club (the introductory offer) which I always recommend when your after a popular hard back (think it was £3.50, quite a good saving). It is published 'yet again' by the brilliant Dorling Kindersley, who, I think are at the forefront of illustrated colour books, they seem to come up trumps everytime. Check the book out next time you are bro
wsing around your local bookstore, you can always put it on your Christmas wish list!
