Disadvantages: Ending is a let down

Every book written by Dean Koontz, I have thoroughly enjoyed.
The Mask is no exception.
The story is basically about a middle class American couple, Carol and Paul.
Carol cannot have children, due to problems she had in her youth that led her to be unable to bear children.
The couple are both doctors, and highly regarded. They apply to an adoption agency to adopt a child.
The board assures them that they are the perfect candidates for adoption.

In the meanwhile strange events start to happen, a massive storm, that leads to them losing their adoption application. A strange thunking noise in the house. Terrible dreams,
Carol is convinced something is timing to stop them adopting a child. But what?

Carol is on her way to work, when a young girl steps out in front of her car, luckily the girl only suffers from minor injuries.
Carol visits the girl in hospital, she is a very pretty girl, and nice to talk to. But girl cannot recall who she is.
The girl's parents cannot be found, so Carol offers to look after the girl.

Things start to get even worse with the girl around; Carol a doctor performs hypnotherapy on the girl, and discovers the girl has at least 5 different personalities.

Who is the girl behind the mask?

Dean Koonz tells the story excellently I was totally gripped, but a big but.
The ending was really disappointing, the story was cut short too quickly, and Dean left a lot of the story unanswered, which really was a big let down.
