Advantages: Funny and touching

Disadvantages: Scary for young children

I'm getting quite into reviewing Roald Dahl books!! Matilda is one of Roald Dahl's best, though don't just write it off as a children's book because it has much mileage as a great read for adults too, so long as you haven't seen the film first!!

Matilda is funny, touching and has a few scary moments, such as when Matilda is creeping into her evil parents' room to put peroxide in her father's hair gel! The reader turns the page with bated breath as we wait for her to get caught.

Much of the humour will appeal to children, such as Mr Wormwood getting the hat glued to his head and Mrs Wormwood dropping the breakfast tray when she sees her husband's hair after he has dyed it!

However, despite its humour, it can be quite a frightening book for small children again, particularly if they are about to start/change schools. Miss Trunchbull is a threatening character who detests children and although 'the baddy' loses in the end, she does lots of horrible things to children first!

This, however, is one of the beauties of the book- that the characters are so well created that you actually believe in them.
