I actually picked this book up at my local car boot sale yesterday. Its not really my usual type of book anything along the ‘Jaws’ theme really puts me off, but once I had started reading it (last night) I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough until I had finished it (early hours of this morning)! The story is about Megalodons, ancestors of the Great white shark. This 20 tonne, 60 foot killing machine was though to have become extinct along with the dinosaurs, there is a fantastic graphic account at the beginning of the book, of how the megalodon hunts and kills a T-rex, shaking and shredding it with its nine inch serrated teeth! The most famous book about sharks is Jaws and of course it was the source material for the now world famous and classic piece of cinema that takes the same name. Naturally twenty years later someone would have the idea to write a novel featuring another toothy beast. Steve Alten took on the idea and came up with Meg. This book is by no means a classic but it's an entertaining read for all of us who don't read a lot of books but like movies instead. I have read ‘Meg’ and its sequel ‘The Trench’ by Steve Alten within the past couple of months. ‘Meg’ is about a prehistoric gigantic shark called a Megalodon that escapes from the deep Mariana Trench in the pacific to wreak havoc on the coast of America. This 60-odd foot shark is eventually killed, but not before having a pup. ‘The Trench’ takes up the story of the pup which is captured and studied. It then escapes and also wreaks havoc on the American population (bringing the figures down by a few dozen). The chase is on to recapture or kill this huge beast.
