Advantages: Anne Rice at her best, Horror that is believable
Disadvantages: Lots of description that you'll love or hate
Memnoch the Devil was the first Anne Rice book I have ever read, and as i've said, it really does throw you into the deep end. We are thrown into the mind boggling world of vampires and body snatching from the very beginning, Rice drawing you into the romantic world of Vampires, blood and emotion. The first pages or so do what i now love Anne Rice's books so much for and that is setting the scene. She writes so beautifully about the haunts of New Orleans with a ghostly atmosphere that takes your breath away. Although the initial shock of finding sympathy with the Vampire Lestat in his solitude i soon felt more comfortable the more i read on. Soon the characters come together, like a family all with their black sheep, making me realise how brotherly Anne envisages this world and it really does break all the stereotypes given to the myth of Vampires. Lestat who has a brotherly, lover, father relationship with his fledglings soon leaves them to begin a suspenseful journey with the devil himself. If you are a particularly religious person you may see this book as blesphemous, but as a person with an open mind i found this gripping as 'Memnoch' tells Lestat his story. The Fall from Heaven, the son of God and how being thrown from above into hell has turned his soul bitter. There are many beautiful descriptions, veronicas veil being the main one i remembered and the vivacity that it posessed with the imprint of Jesus' face. All round its an astonishing read, erotic in parts and horror to counter this...the ultimate climax? There is none, but I promise you will be intrigued by the end. As i said this book led me to read all of Anne Rice's works and if you think you might like them this is an excellent way to begin as it gives you a backdoor entrance into such a complicated world Rice has created. At the average price of £5.99 from most retairlers it is great value for money. 5 stars!!

- 28/03/03 I would say this is probably the best of the vampire chronicles, in my opinion at least, but it is the fifth in the series, so not the obvious place to start! Mind you, I'm planning on going back to read the series before starting the last few, and I'm going to skip the first four, so...!
A slightly belated warm welcome to Dooyoo, too - hope you stick around and enjoy being a member of the site :) |

- 27/03/03 I'm not sure I'd recommend starting with Memnoch - I'd say Interview With The Vampire was really the best one to kick off with... |
