Advantages: Insight into her life.

Disadvantages: Not a true reflection on Alcoholism., Find it hard to feel sorry for her

Being the Daughter of an alcoholic and being educated in my early years,at a catholic convent school, I thought reading Anne Robinson's autobiography would bring out a lot of the emotions I had experienced.

I am a little confused with myself, with my reactions when reading this. I feel a little embarrassed to admit to you that I found it really hard to sympathise or empathise with her.

Anne Robinson has been through so much, she has battled with Alcoholism, loosing everything to it, her husband and her daughter and don?t get me wrong, whatever an alcoholics financial situation is, it's still a very painful, health threatening and demoralising life to lead. But having been through it with my father (God rest his Soul), I found myself looking at alcoholism through diamond encrusted rose tinted glasses when reading Anne's account of it. I have seen it from a lower to middle class aspect and it's a whole different ball game.

I am sure her pain was the same, but I feel it must be a much lighter cross to bear when you can do it with endless amounts of love and support from your family and friends, you can still hold down a job, live in expensive comfortable homes and have financial support from not only your job, a very healthy bank account, and wealthy parents. Believe me it's not the usual road back to recovery. Most alcoholics lose everything and don't always recover it all in the way you read about it in this book.

I sound bitter, I honestly don't feel that way, but if you choose to read the book, you may understand what I mean, how I feel.

I don't want to spoil the story for you, and so will just give you the basic story.

Her story begins from Childhood. Which was very different to a usual one, it covers her teens, how she became to be a reporter. Her relationships with men, her marriages, and all the problems she has had with men.

She certainly has the 'girl
power' factor and I imagine a lot of men would not have liked her, and you will see a few of her softer, gentle emotions, that must stem from her feeling vulnerable and feeling out of control.

Quote 'I would rather cover a war story than hoover the lounge', I think there are quite a few ladies who agree with her on that one.

She is a real fighter, I'll give her that, it's dog eat dog in the world of journalism, and it's clear that her feisty personality has got her where she is today. You will read about some interesting stories she has covered, and the people she has worked for and with, including her television career.

It will take you right up to date, finishing with 'The Weakest Link' how she came to get the job, how it was first meant to be played, and where she got the 'You are the weakest link, Goodbye!' from.

It has a touching epilogue, unexpected, and will make you realise that all her suffering worked out for the best.

Despite feeling that she is too 'precious' for my liking, I did really enjoy it. I looked forward to reading it each time and found it interesting.

It was a Christmas present, so I am unsure about how much it cost, but be sure to check out some good online book sites.

Sorry Anne, Goodbye!

Very good review. I'm in the process of reading this book, less than 80 pages left, so I don't know what the ending is like but I'm really looking forward to it. I think the book is quite good and although I don't have any friends/relatives with alcohol problems, I can understand what you mean about not feeling sorry about Anne too much. I mean ... she can afford to go to a health farm! It's a good book nontheless and gives one a good insight into Anne's life.
