Mendeleyev found some problems with his table; some of the elements did not seem to fit in order of weight, so he rearranged them indicating that science had calculated them wrongly. There were also gaps; here Mendeleyev boldly predicted that these were due to as yet undiscovered elements! As can be imagined, his theory took years to be accepted, but once the incorrect element weights had been determined and a number of new elements discovered as he h...more

The Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleyev can be considered to be the father of chemistry. Without his Periodic Table, and the understanding of the elements that it facilitated, it's unlikely that we would have the marvellous materials and chemical products that we take for granted today. Imagine a world without plastics, semiconductors, alloys, refrigerating agents, or explosives; we would literally still be in the dark ages. In 1869, Mendeleyev was grappling with the problem of the chemical elements.
