Maybe I was reading it in the wrong way, and the reader is supposed to think that Paul is very shallow. Who knows?! Anyway, the book is a fun read, and it covers a great deal of ground. It gives quite a good view of life in France, both for the locals of the now popular areas for emigrating to, such as Correze; and how Parisians are 'welcomed', and how émigré's from the UK etc are welcomed. Merde Actually is the second in the Merde series of books by Stephen Clarke. The first one was A Year In The Merde, and was set in 2003. Our hero, Paul West, had been invited to France to help a company with the dubious acronym of VD to open English style tea shops. Although the first book does reach a conclusion, it was clear while reading it, that there would be a sequel to the novel, and so I went in search at Waterstones for this. Merde Actually was then followed by Merde Happens, and lastly (or at least, until he writes the next one) there is Dial M for Merde. Clarke has used a different writing style with this second novel.
