How can you resist a bargain? At a recent antiques fair I thought I’d found a scoop. Millers Guides to Collectables selling for a third of their recommended retail price. Added to this was the lure of being able to recognise bargain collectables at a snip and sell them on at a profit. My new money making plan, I snapped up three different Guides relieving my pocket of £21.00, but I would soon recoup my outlay with my new found knowledge - ah! Sweet innocence! The Millers Guides themselves are excellent, plenty of pictures, many in colour, and lots of information. In their defence, they state that they are only a guide and a lots depends on condition etc. I spent weeks scouring boot sales and Grandads loft, amassing a stack of goodies that according to my guides were worth a lot of money. I placed my items in a reputable Auction house, Millers Guide at the ready. What a let down! Everything went for a third (or less) of the Millers guide price. I didn’t make a profit, I was lucky to break even. Some of the stuff didn’t even sell so I had to take it home. One of the items was a 1920’s pig money box that according to Millers was worth about £90, it sold for £6.00, I paid a tenner for it!!! So come on, is The Millers Guides a con, has anybody actually ever sold an item for what it says it’s worth? I’d be very surprised if they have. Anyway, I sold my Millers guides at a boot sale to the next poor soul hoping to strike it rich. Me, I just went back to working for a living.

zebra - 04/08/00 Unfortunately people at auctions are out for a bargain just as much as you were. As the owner of a large collection of piggy banks mostly quite ancient(which I don't want - any offers will be considered1) I suspect Miller's were much nearer the mark than the price you got. Such items must be put in to specialist auctions to get their true value. I have seen some awful pigs go for vey high prices on Ebay. |
