Advantages: easy to read, an insight into life of the Great War
Disadvantages: gushy in places, very predictable
The year is 1912 and the story is based around two sisters, Olivia and Victoria. These are no ordinary sister though, they are twins and identical at that. Their mother died during childbirth and they live with their father and live a very wealthy life. From the outside, Victoria and Olivia look identical and not even their own father can tell them apart. On the inside though, they are both very different indeed. Olivia is the typical woman of her time. She is quite happy running the house for her father and carrying out his wishes. Victoria is the complete opposite. She smokes and she has even taught her herself to drive which is not what is expected of a lady!! Above all, she is a fighter and she would love to be like her heros the Pankhurst sisters. Following the suffergette movement is her life and she longs to be a part of it all. Victoria's life takes a dramatic downturn when she meets and falls in love with a married man. He promises her that he is in a loveless marriage and that he will divorce his wife and marry her. Victoria is so young and so naive that she believes him. The couple get seen and the news is reported back to her father. He cant believe the scandel his daughter has caused. Not only has she hurt her family but she has also destroyed her reputation. Her father does the only thing he can think of and forces her to marry a man that is willing to take her on. Things do not turn out well for Victoria. Her heart still belongs to Toby and she cant stand the thought of her husband touching her. There is a war growing in Europe and Victoria is longing to get out there to do her bit, no matter how small it may be. Victoria talks Olivia into a future full of lies and deceit and neither know where it will all end. Although this book is quite "gushy" in places it is still quite a good read. The small details she gives about the war and its conditions are enough to turn your stomach and I
cant help but wonder how so many people survived something so herific. The actual plot of the story though is still in typical Danielle Steele fashion and is very predictable throughout the whole book. There was a few thing that made me giggle throughout the book though and made me marvel at how much our world has changed in such a short time. The funniest has to be when Olivia was disguised when she saw a woman out around town when she must have been at least eight months pregnant...so shameful!! On the whole then, this is a very easy to read book. You dont need to concentrate too much on it and there isnt an in-depth plot to worry about. It is a nice little story and it shoulnd't take you too long to read it. It does make you wonder though about how much the world has come on in 90 years and makes me wonder what will become of the world in another 90.
