Advantages: Textured, eloquent, interesting

Disadvantages: takes a bit of a leap of faith

Hoeg is an author who knows how to gain your trust. The novel opens with the apparently accidental death of a small boy falling from a roof in Copenhagen. Smilla Jaspersen knows better than to make the obvious assumption, and her astounding stubbonness and tenacity draw the reader deeper and deeper into the background to the boy's death. The story takes several very unexpected turns and moves smoothly from the mundane and personal to political and peculiar plotlines.

It is a joy to read, but becomes a little hard to swallow further in. The central character, though is throughout the book's saving grace. Like or loathe the book, you'll love her.

I'm very sorry, but this op is really too short for that wonderful book.
