This book is great. I was traveling in Kathmandu, Nepal, went into a bookstore and this title grabbed me. I wondered why I never heard of the book in the US. Upon looking further I discovered the idea of the book was an essay attacking Catholicism. When Jose Saramago won the Nobel Prize for literature the Vatican issued a statement against the award, and anything that can rile up the Catholic hierarchy certainly demands our attention. Hitchens book elaborates on the problem with religion: that it discounts all those who do not practice the given religion. The Abrahamaic religions do not teach us how to live with honor. Mother Theresa saves mythical souls, and gives purpose to suffering, true humanitarians alleviate suffering and teach us to live as best we can without the carrot of heaven or the threat of hell. Catholicism is great in its two-faced idealogy that does not help man except as placebo. Hitchens book takes an icon, Mother Theresa, and examines her as she should be examined. I read his book in one sitting and cheered. The lessons of his argument are pertinent. We should live for each other and not for myth. Summary: |
