This wistfully comic story proves that, even in his seventies, Graham Greene lost none of his talents. It is closely linked to the Spanish classic Don Quixote, written by Cervantes four hundred years ago, but is a great read in its own right. The allusions and parallels are all sympathetic, rather than forced, and the older story fits appropriately into the years after Franco. The central character is Quixote himself, an old priest in a small town. A chance meeting and his hospitality are rewarded with promotion to the title of monsignor, but this attracts the attention of his disapproving bishop. A similar tale to the classic work of Cervantes - Don Quixote. Greene explores his feelings on religion and politics in a charming and quirky take. Set in Post Franco Spain a simple parish priest happens upon a stranded motorist while fetching a supply of wine from the local co-operative (wine co-operative not co-op supermarket!) A series of events unfold which lead to his escape for a "holiday" with his friend - an avowed marxist and recently deposed mayor. A good book which can be quickly read for fun or contemplated at greated depth depending on the readers needs.
